Rubens Prize Promotional Award of the City of Siegen

Peter Piller

The advantages of Unintentionality

The Hamburg artist Peter Piller received the 2004 Rubens Prize Promotional Award of the City of Siegen. His exhibition at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen provides a comprehensive insight into his work.

In recent years, Peter Piller (born 1968) has created image archives with photographic motifs from various print and digital media. He is not interested in photographic aesthetics, but rather in the often awkward and stereotypical visual language that manifests itself in these image sources. As an archive, the images compiled and grouped by Piller convey a neutral, authentic and at the same time critically scrutinising image of everyday culture.

The Siegen presentation introduces new and representative areas of the collection from his aerial photo archive, the Internet archive and the archive of newspaper photos. It also shows Piller's photos on the subject of "Auffälligkeiten zu Siedlung und Siedler während meiner Umwanderung des Ruhrgebietes" as well as a selection of drawings in which the artist reflects critically and ironically on everyday office life.
