Sammlung Lambrecht-Schadeberg. Gegenwarten der Malerei

29.9.25

To mark the 90th birthday of the museum’s patron, Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg, the Peter Paul Rubens Foundation has now published a new catalogue entitled “Sammlung Lambrecht-Schadeberg. Gegenwarten der Malerei” (The Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection: Presents of Painting) in collaboration with the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen. It documents Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg’s astounding commitment to building and developing a permanent collection of post-war painting for the public.

Since the 1990s, her extraordinary dedication and foresight have enabled Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg to build up an art collection dedicated to the winners of the Rubens Prize. Since 1957, these winning artists have been honoured by the city of Siegen for their life's work. They include Hans Hartung, Giorgio Morandi, Francis Bacon, Antoni Tàpies, Fritz Winter, Emil Schumacher, Cy Twombly, Rupprecht Geiger, Lucian Freud, Maria Lassnig, Sigmar Polke, Bridget Riley, Niele Toroni and Miriam Cahn. Since 2001, the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection has been housed on a permanent basis at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen, being displayed there in regularly changing exhibitions.

The catalogue “Sammlung Lambrecht-Schadeberg. Gegenwarten der Malerei” (The Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection: Presents of Painting), published by Hirmer Verlag, provides a complete overview of the collection, which has now grown to over 250 works. It documents the collection’s development as well as the art-historical significance of the individual artistic positions and works. Particularly in recent years, there have been important new additions to the collection from all the prize winners, continually creating fresh impetus for the collection and the museum. Now, for the first time, the provenance and exhibition history of each individual work has been researched in full.

Thus, the publication shows not only the wealth but also the diversity of artistic developments since the 1950s. Even the traditional medium of painting is being reinterpreted constantly.

“Sammlung Lambrecht-Schadeberg. Gegenwarten der Malerei” (ISBN 978-3-7774-4419-2) is being published by Christian Spies and Thomas Thiel for the Peter Paul Rubens Foundation and the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen. The volume contains contributions in German and English by Christian Berger, Nils Büttner, Martina Dobbe, Barbara Engelbach, Sabine Heinke, Joseph Imorde, Lea März, Nora Memmert, Ines Rüttinger, Stefanie Scheit-Koppitz, Jessica Schiefer, Eva Schmidt, Christian Spies and Thomas Thiel. Printed in 22.5 x 28.5 cm format, the catalogue comprises more than 480 pages with approx. 320 full-colour illustrations. Published by Hirmer Verlag, it is available from bookshops and in the museum shop, priced at 65 euros.
