MGKSiegen to close for completion of its expansion building project
Reopening in summer 2027
To complete its major expansion project, the Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen (MGKSiegen) will close on September 28, 2026, for several months. This closure is due to extensive work required to complete the final phase of construction, as well as some remaining renovation work on the existing building. The “Ristorante e Piazza” brasserie and the studio will remain open.
Starting in October 2026 and marking the end of its 25th anniversary year, MGKSiegen will be on the road with “MGKSiegen on Tour.” Under this theme, the museum will present its works through temporary exhibitions, collaborative events, workshops, and digital formats at various locations in Siegen and the surrounding region.

Expansion Project
The planned expansion, designed by the architectural firm Kleihues + Kleihues, will increase the museum’s usable floor space by a total of 900 square meters spread across three floors. To accommodate the needs of a growing collection, a modern museum storage facility will be created on the ground floor. On the middle level, an event space suitable for a variety of uses will be built. On the top floor, the exhibition space will be expanded to include an 11-meter-high atrium with a skylight. The new building, which features a pyramid-shaped slate roof that rises to a height of 18 meters and aligns with the ridge of the existing building, already provided a clear sense of its dimensions during the topping-out ceremony and a tour of the shell.
The expansion, with planned construction costs totaling 11.8 million euros, is being financed by public funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) and the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia—each contributing 5.4 million euros—as well as 1 million euros from the Siegen-Wittgenstein district. The university city of Siegen is granting MGKSiegen the right to use the municipal property and the existing building free of charge as part of an already extended cooperation agreement. The Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen gGmbH is the project owner.
Particularly noteworthy is the exceptionally generous private commitment of patron Barbara Lambrecht-Schadeberg, who agreed in advance to cover the entire planning costs for the expansion and to secure the future of the MGKSiegen through an endowment contribution complementary to the public grants.
Construction is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2027. Only then can the artworks be moved into the new storage facility and exhibition space. In addition, work on the existing building and in the areas currently closed to the public will be completed, and an exhibition will be set up to mark the opening of the expansion.
