25 Years, 25 Artworks

The MGKSiegen Collections

The Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen opened on 6 May 2001 and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. For a quarter of a century, the museum has been offering its visitors new perspectives on contemporary art and its history with its collections, exhibition programme and diverse educational offerings.

To mark its anniversary, the MGKSiegen is presenting the development of the museum through 25 selected works in the exhibition “25 Years, 25 Works”. The works are exemplary of the significance and artistic focus of the two collections – the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection, featuring the Rubens Prize winners of the city of Siegen, and the Contemporary Art Collection. Important 20th-century paintings are juxtaposed with outstanding photographs and installation works from the 1960s to the present day. Formal and conceptual approaches are combined with social, political and global perspectives of contemporary art. The works reflect the exhibition history, reveal regional connections and illustrate the great private and public commitment that has been behind the international art museum for 25 years.

Beyond the exhibition period, the project will be extended into the public space in autumn 2026. Then the MGKSiegen will be on the move, showing these works in the form of temporary presentations, collaborative events, workshops and digital formats at various locations in Siegen and the surrounding region.
