Bernd and Hilla Becher, Half-timbered Houses in the Siegen Industrial Estate

On a walk together through Eiserfeld, we are following in the footsteps of Hilla and Bernd Becher. The so-called Siegerland half-timbered houses can be found in many villages around Siegen, as well as in the town itself. Most of them have been completely clad over the years or extended with annexes. Yet at their core, and hidden behind the façades, lies the half-timbered structure typical of the Siegerland region, consisting of wooden beams and compartments. The artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher photographed the typical half-timbered houses in numerous districts and communities in and around Siegen. They began this work in 1959 and completed it there in 1978.

The event is part of the MKGSiegen ON TOUR project – because we’re currently on the move. From 28 September, the museum is relocating its activities to other venues in the city, to surrounding regions and to the digital space. This is because, apart from the studio, the museum building is currently closed due to the new extension.
