Otto Piene
Die Sonne kommt näher (Proliferation of the Sun)

1966/2003
Slide installation, paint on 320 glass slides, 4 slide carousels
Contemporary Art Collection

The light installation “Die Sonnne kommt näher (Proliferation of the Sun)” is one of the early, key immersive installations that Piene first conceived as a slide performance for the Black Gate Theatre in New York in 1966. Originally, the space was equipped with foam rubber furniture, so that visitors could linger and immerse themselves completely in the light installation. The slide carousels were also backed by sound recordings, in which Piene gave the performers precise instructions on how to operate the slide images. In 2003, this performance form was translated into a permanent installation, which we can experience at MGKSiegen.
